Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures and one of Dr Lim’s specialties. Performed well this type of surgery can give lasting, natural looking breasts which can leave you feeling better about yourself and improve your self confidence. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the size and shape of the breasts with implants. The surgery involves the placement of an implant behind each breast to increase its volume and enhance its shape. Breast augmentation surgery can be performed at any age once breast development is completed and is an option for women who are dissatisfied with their breasts for a number of reasons. Common reasons women seek breast augmentation include:

  • A woman feels her breasts are too small.
  • The breast size is not proportional to the rest of the body.
  • To balance the size and shape of the breasts if they are unequal.
  • To improve contour and size of the breasts following pregnancy, breast-feeding or weight loss.

Breast implants fall into two broad categories and are either silicone or saline (salt water) filled. Dr Lim uses both cohesive silicone gel and saline breast implants. The new generation of silicone gel implants is very safe and TGA (Therapeutic Goods Association) approved. The majority of breast implants used in Australia are silicone gel as silicone filled implants achieve a more natural result. The actual shell or membrane of the implant comes in either a smooth or rough (textured) surface. The current belief is that implants with a rough surface may minimize the amount of scar tissue that forms around them. This scarring can cause hardening or “capsular contracture”.

The shape of the implant varies from round to anatomical (tear-drop). The round implant comes in both low and high profile whilst the tear-drop implant comes in a variety of different widths, heights, projections and sizes. In general the round implant is suitable for patients who are satisfied with the shape of their breasts and only require an increase in size. The round implant also gives more upper pole fullness to the breast. The tear-drop implant can give a more natural shape. The more projected lower half of the implant can lift the nipple to a certain extent and may be more suitable in those patients with slightly droopy breasts following pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss.

There are many different factors involved in the selection of the shape and size of implants. Dr Lim is experienced in the use of both round and tear-drop shaped implants and will assist you in making the right decision.
