The Procedure
Too-large, heavy breasts sometimes interfere with women's lifestyles - they make exercise and clothes shopping difficult, and bras rarely seem to fit over them comfortably. In fact, some women eventually develop deep grooves in their shoulders from their bra straps. Other women experience constant neck and back ache due to the weight of their breasts.
Breast reduction is a procedure that allows for the excess fat, tissue, and skin to be carefully removed, leaving behind a more proportionate, flattering bust. Breast reduction can be truly life altering!
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is one of the most highly successful plastic surgery procedures. It not only produces pleasing cosmetic results, it is recommended as a solution for the physical problems large, heavy breasts can cause. Very large breasts can result in poor posture - causing neck and upper back pain, can limit physical activity and in many cases, can also cause psychological discomfort and embarrassment.
Additionally, skin irritation may occur with infections or rashes developing in the folds under the breasts. Breast reduction may also be used to match the size of a reconstructed breast following mastectomy. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, the result of this surgery is impressive with problems resolved overnight. Dr Lim can advise you of the benefits you are likely to experience with this surgery and help you achieve the outcome you desire.
Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess skin, breast and fatty tissue to restore the balance between the size of the breasts and the rest of the body. Following removal of the breast tissue, the nipples and areolas are repositioned to suit the new size and shape of the breasts. This surgery can be performed at any age after breast development has finished but repositioning of the nipples may result in an inability to breastfeed – a consideration for women who are planning to have children. As weight loss will affect the size and shape of the breasts, you may be advised to stabilise your weight (if you plan to lose a significant amount) prior to the surgery. Dr Lim will discuss your expectations of the surgery, including your desired breast size and shape to plan the surgery. Bear in mind, it is difficult to accurately predict the effect of future weight loss, pregnancy and ageing on breast size and shape. Your breasts will continue to be affected by these factors following the surgery.
