Ear Reshaping
For children, ears that stick out can be a source of constant teasing. Ear reshaping (otoplasty) is a very simple procedure that is normally performed on children as young as five, but can be performed on adults as well. Most commonly, otoplasty is used to correct ears that stick out too far from the head. Often this is a family trait. Otoplasty is also used to correct ears that have an undeveloped fold, or that have failed to develop correctly. Ear reshaping surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic as day surgery.
Who is a candidate for ear reshaping surgery?
- People who have ears that stick out
- People who have a very large conchal bowl (inside the ear)
- People with undeveloped ears
- People who are not happy with the shape of their ears
- People whose ears have a cauliflower appearance (usually through some form of contact sport)
The otoplasty procedure
An otoplasty procedure usually takes between one to two hours to perform, though it may take longer if the procedure is very complicated. The method used to perform the surgery on the ear will depend on the specifics of the problem.
One of most common methods of ear reshaping surgery involves making a small incision in the back of the ear. Dr Lim then shapes the cartilage, removing small amounts at a time and bending the ears back toward the patient's head. It may also be necessary to remove a larger amount of cartilage to keep the fold as natural looking as possible. Ear surgery leaves a scar behind the ear which is usually hidden by the hair. Scars are generally inconspicuous, and fade with time
